40% to 60% of People Relapse Within the First Year of Going to Inpatient Treatment*

Rehab isn’t the finish line, it’s the starting point. Getting sober in a structured, protected environment is one challenge; staying sober in the real world where anything can happen is another.

Lasting recovery requires more than a break from everyday life. It takes practical tools, adaptive strategies, and professional sober coaching to navigate real-life triggers, and stressors in order to attain meaningful recovery.

3 Stages of a Relapse

Mental Mental

The individual is not actively using, but their emotions and behaviors are setting them up for a relapse.

Emotional Emotional

This stage is a mental war between the desire to stay sober and the thoughts of using.

Physical Physical

This is the final stage where the individual begins using drugs or alcohol again.

* Approximately 40-60% of individuals who complete drug rehabilitation programs relapse within the first year post-treatment, according to a comprehensive meta-analysis of addiction recovery outcomes. The percentage stat is from The National Institute of Drug Abuse. (2020). Treatment and Recovery.

Why a Sober Companion Changes Everything

Real-World Sober Support

A sober companion accompanies you in your daily life and will be with you in moments that trigger relapse, whether that be:

  • family and social situations
  • work stress
  • travel or late nights alone

Intervention Before Relapse

Relapse doesn't come out of nowhere; it slowly develops over time. A recovery coach can step in and stop a relapse before it starts by keeping small slips from becoming full-blown setbacks. They can spot:

  • subtle behavior changes
  • emotional shifts
  • risky patterns and hidden warning signs

Structured For Success

Left alone, most people drift back into old habits. A sober coach keeps you on track with:

  • daily structure
  • personalized guidance
  • building consistent, healthy routines

Rehab Centers Vs Sober Companions

Most people relapse not because they lack willpower, but because life after rehab can be overwhelming.

Traditional treatment removes you from your triggers, but doesn't teach you how to live sober in the real world.

That's where personalized, one-on-one support makes all the difference.

What to Expect When Working With a Sober Companion?

This is very much a team effort. We work closely with each client’s treatment team, and every case is supported by a dedicated case manager.

Our management team stays in daily contact with our companions to ensure consistency, accountability, and the highest level of care.

We focus not only on supporting a clinical treatment plan, but also on helping clients build a meaningful, balanced life. This often includes integrating them into both treatment communities and healthy recreational activities such as cooking classes, rock climbing, and other social outlets.

The goal is to establish a strong support network and help clients develop healthy routines and coping mechanisms for everyday life. By learning how to function independently and manage real-world challenges, clients are better equipped to prevent relapse.

Do You Support Mental Health Situations?

Yes, we regularly work with clients experiencing a range of mental health conditions, whether that involves medication stabilization or helping them rebuild a structured daily routine after leaving a treatment facility.

We recognize that mental health clients have different needs than those dealing primarily with addiction. Because of this, our approach is tailored accordingly.

We collaborate closely with each client’s clinical team, executing their treatment plan while adapting our day-to-day support to align with the specific goals and challenges of the individual.

This often looks different from our work with addiction clients, particularly in how routines are established, how progress is measured, and how support is delivered.

We also have experience working with dual-diagnosis clients, where mental health and substance use challenges intersect, requiring a more integrated and nuanced approach.

Across all cases, we maintain consistent communication with the clinical team, providing detailed observations and updates to ensure the client is progressing and receiving the most effective care possible.

How Long Will I Have a Sober Companion?

This is a highly specialized service. We require a minimum of 10 hours per week with one of our coaches, though many clients need a greater level of structure, especially when transitioning out of rehab.

With addiction clients, our goal is to help establish a strong support network within the first 30, 60, and 90 days. As that foundation becomes more stable, our level of involvement typically decreases over time.

Mental health clients often require a longer duration of support, depending on their diagnosis and individual needs. For more detailed information, please visit our Mental Health page.

Is Hiring a Sober Companion an Alternative to Rehab?

No, we are a coaching company. While we frequently work under clinical direction and collaborate closely with licensed professionals, we are not licensed medical providers ourselves.

That said, if attending a rehab facility is not an option, we can coordinate with clinical professionals who are able to deliver many of the same services typically offered in a rehab setting, but from the comfort of the client’s home.
